Google has officially launched Google Wallet, including Google Pay, in Nigeria. The service went live on 28 October 2026 for Android phones and Wear OS watches.
Users can now add supported bank cards to Google Wallet and make contactless payments by tapping their phones in stores, as well as pay in apps and online. The digital wallet also allows people to store loyalty cards, event tickets and boarding passes in one place.
At launch, Google’s supported list includes cards from four Nigerian banks: FirstBank, GTBank, UBA and Zenith Bank. Most of the eligible cards are Mastercard debit, credit or prepaid cards. UBA also supports certain Visa prepaid cards. Cards from other banks, Verve cards and most fintech platforms are not yet on the list.
Google says the service uses multiple layers of security and industry-standard encryption to protect payment data. Users can also lock or wipe their devices remotely through Find My Device if a phone is lost or stolen.
The rollout gives eligible Android users in Nigeria a new digital payment option alongside existing local services.
