Former Black Stars coach Otto Addo has dragged the Ghana Football Association to FIFA over the termination of his contract earlier this year.
Addo was dismissed by the GFA on 31 March 2026, just 72 days before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The decision came hours after a 2-1 friendly defeat to Germany in Stuttgart, which followed a heavy 5-1 loss to Austria days earlier. The results extended a run of four consecutive defeats for the Black Stars.
The German-born coach, who was in his second spell in charge after being reappointed in March 2024, had guided Ghana to qualification for the World Cup. He became the first coach to lead the side to consecutive World Cup appearances. However, his tenure was marked by inconsistency, including Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The GFA stated at the time that it had “parted ways” with Addo effective immediately and would communicate a new technical direction in due course. Reports indicated that the early termination of his three-year deal could involve compensation of around $500,000 for the remaining period of the contract.
Addo has since spoken about the exit, saying he was never given a formal reason for the decision and that there had been ongoing tensions with GFA leadership during his time in charge.
