CDR Africa is published by CDR Media, a company registered in Ghana. This policy explains what we collect when you read the site or get in touch, why we collect it, and what you can ask us to do about it. We have tried to keep it short and specific rather than long and vague.
The short version
You can read every article on this site without giving us anything. We set no advertising cookies, run no third-party trackers, and do not sell or share your data with anyone. We only hold personal information if you choose to give it to us — by subscribing to the newsletter or writing to us.
What we collect
When you simply read
Nothing that identifies you. We count page views on our own servers to see which stories are read. To tell a returning reader from a new one, we create a one-way code from your IP address and browser type. That code cannot be reversed into your details, and the key used to create it changes every day, so a code from today cannot be matched to one from tomorrow. We keep those codes for 60 days and then delete them.
Our web server also keeps standard access logs, which include IP addresses, for security and troubleshooting. These are kept for 90 days and then deleted.
When you subscribe to the newsletter
Your email address, and the IP address you subscribed from. The IP address is kept only to investigate abuse, such as someone signing up an address that is not theirs.
We use confirmed opt-in: you will receive an email asking you to confirm before we ever send you a newsletter. Every email we send has an unsubscribe link that works in one click.
When you contact us
Your name, email address, and whatever you write in the message. We use it to reply to you and nothing else. We keep messages for 12 months and then delete them.
Cookies
We use two cookies, both strictly necessary, and neither is used to track you:
- A security cookie that stops other websites submitting our forms on your behalf.
- A sign-in cookie, set only for CDR Africa staff who log in to publish. If you are a reader, you never receive it.
If you use the light/dark toggle, that choice is stored in your own browser and never sent to us.
We do not use Google Analytics, advertising pixels, social media trackers, or any other third-party script that would follow you across the web.
Who we share it with
We do not sell, rent or trade your information. It is handled by the services that run the site:
- Amazon Web Services — hosts the site and sends our email. Servers are in London, United Kingdom.
We will disclose information if the law requires it. As a news organisation we will resist requests that would compromise a source.
Where your data is held
On servers in the United Kingdom. If you are reading from Ghana, that means your information is transferred outside the country; if you are reading from the European Economic Area, it stays within a jurisdiction with equivalent protections.
Your rights
You can ask us to:
- tell you what we hold about you
- correct anything that is wrong
- delete it
- stop using it for a particular purpose
- send you a copy in a portable format
To unsubscribe you do not need to ask — use the link in any newsletter. For anything else, write to info@cdrafrica.com and we will respond within 30 days.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you can complain to Ghana's Data Protection Commission, or to your local data protection authority if you are in the EEA or the UK.
Children
This site is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect their information.
Changes
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top. If the change is significant we will say so on the site.
