A Texas father originally from Mali who had lived in the United States for 25 years with no criminal record was detained by immigration agents as he finished a night shift working as an Uber driver.
Without being able to speak to his lawyer or appear before a judge, he was placed on a plane and flown first to Ghana — a country with which he had no ties. He was later sent on to Mali, his country of origin.
The deportation went ahead despite a determination by a US immigration court judge that he could not be returned to Mali because of the likely risk of persecution.
