Alhassan Dantata (1877–1955) was a Nigerian merchant and entrepreneur who built a substantial trading empire in West Africa during the colonial era. He traded commodities including groundnuts, kola nuts, livestock and imported goods, with his commercial activities extending across present-day Nigeria and the Gold Coast, now Ghana.

Through his business dealings and investments, Dantata became one of the wealthiest African merchants of his time. He also became known for his philanthropy and support for religious and community causes.

His business legacy continued through subsequent generations of the Dantata family. Alhassan Dantata was the great-grandfather of Aliko Dangote, who later founded the Dangote Group and became one of Africa’s most prominent industrialists.

From a trading empire built in West Africa more than a century ago to one of Africa’s largest business groups today, the Dantata-Dangote story spans generations.
