Algeria has announced that it is ending diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), citing what it described as a continued pattern of “provocative or hostile actions” from Abu Dhabi.

Following the diplomatic decision, Algeria’s Ministry of National Defence also announced restrictions on UAE-registered aircraft operating in Algerian airspace. However, UAE civilian commercial flights to and from Houari Boumediene International Airport in Algiers have been allowed to continue until the end of 2026, when the existing agreement governing the flights expires.

The UAE has expressed hope that Algeria’s airspace decision will only be temporary. In a statement posted on X, the Emirati foreign ministry said it remained committed to maintaining the “fraternal ties” between the two countries and emphasized its appreciation for the Algerian people.

Algeria’s Foreign Ministry said the decision to sever diplomatic relations came after it had exhausted efforts to resolve the growing tensions through diplomatic channels. While the ministry did not point to a particular incident, it accused the UAE of repeatedly engaging in conduct that Algeria considered unacceptable.

According to Algiers, it had previously issued several warnings to Abu Dhabi about the potential consequences of its actions. However, Algeria said the UAE continued with what it described as unjustified and regrettable conduct, leaving the government with no choice but to respond.

As part of the diplomatic break, the UAE ambassador was summoned to Algeria’s Foreign Ministry on Thursday and formally informed of the decision. He was reportedly given 48 hours to comply with the government’s instructions.

Meanwhile, UAE presidential diplomatic adviser Anwar Gargash called for diplomatic disagreements to be handled through dialogue, clear communication and mutual understanding of interests. His comments came shortly after Algeria announced the decision.

The latest development follows months of worsening relations between the two countries. Earlier in February, Algeria had begun steps to end its air-services agreement with the UAE. The agreement was originally signed in May 2013 and formally ratified in December 2014.

Algeria has previously taken similar action against Morocco. In August 2021, it severed diplomatic relations with Rabat over allegations of hostile conduct and later closed its airspace to Moroccan civilian and military aircraft.
