Nairobi has been selected to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, becoming the first African city to stage the sport’s flagship event.
World Athletics announced the decision on 15 September 2026 following its council meeting in Budapest. The Kenyan capital defeated bids from London, Rome and Munich. Munich was awarded the 2031 edition.

Events will be held at Kasarani Stadium, currently being renovated ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Nairobi previously hosted the World U18 Championships in 2017 and the World U20 Championships in 2021.
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe described Nairobi’s bid as “compelling and emotional,” calling the decision historic. “Kenya is one of the great athletics nations. The sport is woven into the fabric of the country,” he said.

The championships mark a landmark moment for African athletics.
