Namibia has launched its first state-owned air ambulance service as part of efforts to improve emergency medical response and ensure critically ill and injured patients receive faster access to specialised healthcare.
The service operates a specially equipped Learjet configured as a flying intensive care unit, allowing medical teams to transport patients requiring urgent medical attention over long distances.
The initiative is also supported by helicopter services from Namibia’s police and defence force, providing additional emergency response capabilities, particularly in areas that are difficult to access by road.
The air ambulance service is expected to significantly reduce the time required to transport patients from remote communities to major referral hospitals, addressing challenges associated with long road journeys and limited access to specialised medical facilities.
The launch marks a significant step in strengthening Namibia’s emergency healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to critical medical services across the country.
