A surgeon in Ogun State has operated on a patient in Abuja, in what Redeemer’s Health Village calls the first tele-robotic surgery in West Africa.
The procedure took place on 19 September 2026. Professor Obi Ekwenna-Davis, a urology and transplantation specialist and co-founder of RoboMed Global, sat at a Toumai robotic console at Redeemer’s Health Village in Redemption City. The patient remained at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja, about 500 kilometres away.
The operation was a robot-assisted right radical nephrectomy: removal of a kidney with a cancerous tumour. It lasted about three hours, with short pauses to check the equipment and connection. The patient was later said to be in good condition and expected to leave hospital within 24 hours.
Redeemer’s Health Village carried out the surgery with RoboMed Global and Nisa Premier Hospital. RHV chief executive Dr Adedamola Dada said it showed specialist care could reach patients without forcing them to travel. Nisa founder Dr Ibrahim Wada said the patient received expertise from another city without leaving Abuja.
