Seven armed groups operating in different parts of Ethiopia have announced the formation of a new alliance aimed at removing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government.
The coalition, called the Alliance for Survival (also referred to as the Ethiopian Peoples’ Forces Alliance for Survival), brings together the Amhara Fano National Movement, the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), and four other groups from the Ogaden, Afar, and Benishangul-Gumuz regions.
In a joint statement, the groups accused Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government of presiding over “war, genocide, mass destruction, and utter poverty,” claiming Ethiopia is at risk of disintegration.
Ethiopia has faced years of armed conflict in Oromia and Amhara, the country’s two most populous regions. There have also been renewed tensions in Tigray, where a two-year civil war that ended with a 2022 peace deal left hundreds of thousands dead and millions displaced.
Federal authorities have not yet issued an official response to the announcement.
