President John Dramani Mahama has left Accra for New York to attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly. Ghana is expected to take part in talks on global development, reparatory justice, international cooperation and investment.
The session is running under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All.” The UN’s high-level week is from 18 to 28 September 2026.
President Mahama will host two side events.
On Monday, 21 September, he will host a high-level meeting on the Accra Reset, titled “Full Circle: Making Global Development Work Again.” Leaders are expected to discuss how global development can work better, especially for Africa and the Global South.
On Wednesday, 23 September, he will host another meeting on reparatory justice. The focus is “From Commitments to Action on Reparatory Justice,” including the return of cultural property and heritage. The meeting follows Ghana’s Next Steps Conference held in Accra earlier this year. Progress reports are expected from a High-Level Advisory Council on Reparatory Justice and related panels.
On Thursday, 24 September, President Mahama will deliver Ghana’s official statement at the General Debate.
He is also due to meet world leaders, the UN Secretary-General and business executives. Other events include a US-Ghana Presidential Roundtable organised by the US-Africa Chamber of Commerce, a speech at the Council on Foreign Relations, the Ocean Panel Leaders’ Meeting, and ringing the NASDAQ Closing Bell to promote Ghana as an investment destination.
He will end the New York visit on Friday, 25 September, with a town hall meeting with Ghanaians living in the United States, where he is expected to speak about his plans for national development.
Travelling with him are First Lady Lordina Dramani Mahama, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, other Cabinet ministers, and senior government officials.
