Police officer charged with murder over death of 20-year-old Central University student

General Corporal Robert Katey Koranteng of the Ghana Police Service has been arraigned before the Adabraka District Court in Accra and charged with murder in connection with the death of 20-year-old Central University law student Ivan Apprey Baidoo. The charge was announced on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.

Koranteng, 34, who was stationed at the Traffic Management Enforcement Unit at the Police Headquarters in Accra, is accused of unlawfully causing Baidoo’s death through unlawful harm, contrary to Section 46 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on August 27, 2026, when Baidoo boarded a Yango motorbike operated by Samuel Wesley Arthur from Ashongman Estates to the East Legon Astroturf Park, where he was heading to play football.

The court was told that the motorbike rider allegedly jumped a red traffic light at the UPSA traffic intersection, where Koranteng was on duty. The officer pursued the motorbike and signalled the rider to stop. However, Arthur allegedly failed to comply and continued through the Okponglo traffic light and the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange before heading onto the Tema Motorway.
The pursuit continued beyond the Old Tollbooth on the Tema Motorway, where Koranteng allegedly kicked the motorbike with his leg. The impact caused the rider to lose control of the motorcycle, which crashed into a concrete barrier.

Baidoo, who was the passenger, sustained serious injuries. Good Samaritans later transported him and the rider to the Tema General Hospital, where Baidoo was pronounced dead on arrival. Arthur was treated and discharged.
A post-mortem examination conducted on September 3 by pathologist Dr Eric Dumfeh at the Tema General Hospital established the cause of death as haemorrhagic shock resulting from bilateral haemothorax and haemoperitoneum caused by blunt trauma to the chest and abdomen.

The prosecution further alleged that Koranteng left the scene without stopping to assist the victims or arranging medical attention.
The Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department took over the case on September 8. Koranteng was arrested on September 12 and subsequently arraigned. The court did not take his plea and remanded him in custody to reappear on September 29, 2026.
Investigations are continuing.
