Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has praised Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama for his leadership in advancing the global campaign for reparative justice.
During bilateral talks, Lula singled out Mahama’s efforts to keep the issue of historical reparations on the international agenda. The Brazilian leader said Mahama’s consistent advocacy had helped strengthen the voice of African nations calling for recognition of the lasting impacts of slavery and colonialism.
The discussion forms part of wider conversations between the two presidents on the margins of major international gatherings. Both leaders have previously spoken in favour of greater global attention to reparations, framing it as a matter of justice and historical accountability.
Ghana has played a prominent role in recent years in pushing the reparations agenda within African Union and United Nations forums. Brazil, under Lula, has also taken a more active stance on the issue, reflecting the country’s own history and large Afro-Brazilian population.
