The National Sports Authority (NSA) has temporarily suspended all boxing activities in Ghana following the tragic death of professional boxer Ernest Akushey, popularly known as “Bahubali.”
The 32-year-old boxer died on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, after sustaining serious injuries in a fight against Jacob Dickson at the Bukom Boxing Arena on September 12. He collapsed after the bout and was rushed to the LEKMA Hospital in Accra, where he later passed away.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show on Wednesday, September 24, NSA Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah confirmed the temporary suspension. He noted that the move is to allow for a full investigation and to review safety protocols in the sport.
The NSA extended its condolences to Akushey’s family and the entire boxing fraternity, vowing to prioritize athlete safety moving forward.
