GFL Secretary General Alleges Helicopter Crash Was Failed Coup Targeting President Mahama

The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has claimed that the August 6 helicopter crash in Adansi Akrofuom—which killed eight high-profile government officials—was not a mere accident, but part of a failed coup attempt aimed at President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking publicly, Koomson alleged the incident was orchestrated as part of a broader plan to destabilise the Mahama administration. He questioned how such a tragedy could occur under the watch of highly trained and experienced pilots, stating, “It was a coup that failed.”

Among the casualties were Minister of Defence Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister of Environment Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, and First National Vice Chairman of the NDC Dr. Samuel Sarpong.

Koomson warned that if top officials could be targeted, then the President himself must exercise extreme caution. He urged President Mahama to take strict security precautions, even invoking the kind of protective measures once used by Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

He also accused the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) of being behind “evil machinations” against the current government and called for a full, independent investigation into the crash. “This cannot be treated as a mere accident,” he emphasized.

The tragic incident has sparked public outrage and demands for transparency as questions surrounding the cause of the crash remain unanswered.
