Disgraced former U.S. congressman George Santos has reported to prison to begin a sentence of over seven years for multiple federal crimes, including wire fraud, identity theft, and lying to federal authorities.
The 37-year-old is now in custody at the Federal Correctional Institution in Fairton, New Jersey. His conviction marks the dramatic fall of a political newcomer who flipped a New York congressional seat in 2022 before being expelled from Congress in 2023—the first expulsion in over 20 years.
Santos pleaded guilty last year to fraud-related charges, admitting he lied about his background, misused campaign funds for luxury expenses, and collected unemployment benefits while employed. Prosecutors said he charged over $44,000 to his campaign using donors’ credit cards without their knowledge. He was ordered to pay at least $374,000 in restitution.
Known for his flair for drama, Santos posted on social media before turning himself in: “My rhinestones are packed… legends never truly exit.” After sentencing, he attempted to raise money through personalized videos on Cameo.
Santos’ downfall began after a 2022 New York Times investigation revealed he had fabricated much of his resume, including false claims about his education, career, and even his family’s connection to the 9/11 attacks. The revelations led to multiple investigations and, ultimately, 23 federal charges.
From a political rise to a criminal sentence, Santos’ story has become a cautionary tale in American politics.
