China Confirms Visa-Free Travel for UK and Canadian Nationals

British and Canadian passport holders will be able to visit mainland China for up to 30 days without a visa starting 17 February. The policy covers tourism, business travel, and visits to family and friends, and will initially run until 31 December.

The announcement follows UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s recent official visit to China, where he met with President Xi Jinping. Both leaders agreed to ease travel restrictions as part of efforts to improve bilateral ties.

Starmer said the move would make it easier for British businesses to expand into the Chinese market. However, critics argue that the UK’s push to reset relations with Beijing risks sidelining concerns around human rights and national security.

The temporary visa-free arrangement signals a notable shift in travel policy and could boost tourism and trade between China, the UK, and Canada in the months ahead.
