Multi-Vehicle Crash Kills 21 in South Africa’s Western Cape

At least 21 people have died in a multi-vehicle road crash in South Africa’s Western Cape province, according to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).

The fatal collision occurred on Sunday night along the N1 highway between Leeu-Gamka and Prince Albert, approximately 380 kilometres northeast of Cape Town.

Details of the Accident

The crash involved two minibus taxis and an SUV. Preliminary reports indicate that the two taxis collided head-on before the SUV crashed into the vehicles.

The incident reportedly occurred at around 9:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, resulting in the closure of the highway as emergency responders and authorities attended the scene.

The RTMC confirmed that 21 people sustained fatal injuries. Several other occupants were reportedly taken to hospital for medical treatment.

Investigation Underway

South African police have opened a culpable homicide investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the crash.
