A young Palestinian boy has publicly thanked Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama for his support of Palestine following the president’s address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
The boy held a handwritten note that read: “Thank you President Mahama. We will never forget your steadfast support for Palestine.”
President Mahama delivered his speech in New York on 24 September 2026. In it, he strongly criticised the humanitarian situation in Gaza, describing the loss of civilian lives — including more than 20,000 children — as a crisis of international credibility. He condemned collective punishment, enforced starvation and mass displacement as violations of international law.

Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s recognition of the State of Palestine and its commitment to a viable two-state solution in which Israel and Palestine would live side by side in peace and security with guaranteed borders. At the same time, he condemned acts of terrorism by Hamas and called on all parties to respect international humanitarian law without exception.
Ghana has long recognised the State of Palestine, dating back to 1988. Mahama’s remarks at the UN continued that position while urging the international community to move beyond what he called “diplomatic euphemisms” and act with moral authority.

The boy’s simple message has circulated as a personal expression of appreciation for the Ghanaian leader’s stance.
