The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has directed shops, markets and other commercial establishments to suspend operations from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, 3 October to take part in the National Sanitation Day clean-up.
The exercise will also mark 2026 World Cleanup Day, with AMA hosting the national flagship event. It will be led by Local Government Minister Mahama Ayariga under the theme “National Sanitation Day: Local Actions Yielding National Impact.”
Focus areas include desilting drains, sweeping streets, collecting refuse and cleaning public spaces and business surroundings. Key locations include London Market, Rawlings Park, Tuesday Market, Camara and Circle Neoplan.
AMA has warned that sanitation officers and the Sama-Sama task force will monitor compliance. Defaulters risk prosecution and penalties.
Residents, traders, transport operators, corporates, NGOs, churches, youth groups and schools are all urged to participate.
