Africa now has about 365 companies generating $1 billion or more in annual revenue, with the companies collectively generating roughly $1.5 trillion a year. About 30 companies on the continent now generate more than $10 billion in annual revenue. South Africa Dominates The map of big business remains highly concentrated, with South Africa clearly leading the ranking. It is followed by Egypt, Nigeria, Morocco and Algeria. 2026 Ranking 1. Several other countries have one or two. What the Numbers Show South Africa accounts for about 42% of Africa’s billion-dollar-revenue companies, despite making up a much smaller share of the continent’s GDP. The five largest economies — South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Algeria and Morocco — host about 73% of these firms. A growing share, about 55%, are African-owned rather than local arms of foreign multinationals. The number of companies has grown only modestly since 2023, but their scale has grown faster, with oil, gas and mining driving much of the additional revenue.
