Zelensky to meet Trump in Washington on Monday after summit with Putin ends without deal

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to travel to Washington, D.C. on Monday for a high-stakes meeting with Donald Trump, following an inconclusive summit between the US and Russian presidents in Alaska.

Despite no agreement being reached on the ongoing war in Ukraine, Donald Trump emphasized via social media that the most effective solution would be a direct peace agreement, rather than a temporary ceasefire, which he noted “often times do not hold up.”

While President Biden claimed progress was made, Vladimir Putin stated he was “sincerely interested” in ending the war. However, according to analysts, Putin left the summit with advantages and offered no significant compromises.

In a “long and substantive” call that followed the summit, Zelensky spoke with Trump and several NATO leaders, reaffirming Ukraine’s role in any future resolution.

Meanwhile, relief in Kyiv is palpable, as fears of a deal being made without Ukrainian involvement were temporarily eased.
