The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), and the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) have jointly voiced their frustration over the delayed release of the exchange rate and subsequent payment of the book and research allowance. This allowance is crucial for lecturers, supporting their research and academic endeavors, and the delay is causing significant disruption.
In a unified stance, the three associations convened on June 8, 2025, and resolved that the government must urgently address the issue. They are demanding the immediate release of the exchange rate and the commencement of the payment process. While acknowledging the habitual lateness of the allowance, the associations have firmly stated that they will not accept any payment extensions beyond September 2025.
The associations are reminding the government that the book and research allowance is a statutory entitlement, as outlined in their Conditions of Service. They are also emphasizing its vital role in promoting research, enhancing teaching, and facilitating knowledge sharing within Ghana’s higher education sector. Failure to begin the payment process by June 13, 2025, will result in a nationwide strike across all campuses by UTAG, TUTAG, and CETAG. The associations are urging the government to take swift action to prevent academic disruptions and prioritize the well-being of educators and the broader academic community.
