University Senior Staff in Ghana Begin Indefinite Strike Over Unmet Agreement

Accra, Ghana – Academic activities at technical universities across Ghana face disruption as the Senior Staff Association of Ghana (SSAG), the Technical University Administrators Association, and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association have jointly declared an indefinite strike, effective today, Wednesday, May 21. The unions are protesting the government’s failure to honor an agreement aimed at improving their conditions of service.

According to union leaders, the agreement, which is now six months old, has been consistently ignored by both the current and previous administrations. Frustration over the lack of progress in fulfilling the terms of the agreement has led to this industrial action. George Ansong, National Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Ghana, stated that the strike was a “last resort” after repeated attempts at dialogue with the government proved unsuccessful.

The leadership of the striking unions has directed all members to stay home until their demands are met. This action is expected to significantly impact the day-to-day operations of technical universities, potentially affecting students, research activities, and administrative functions. The unions are calling on the government to address their grievances promptly to ensure a swift resolution and the resumption of normal academic activities.
