Accra, Ghana – In a significant step towards strengthening Ghana’s national security and regional stability, the United States government has donated 14 Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF). The official handover ceremony took place at the 153 Armoured Regiment, Abuga Square in Burma Camp, Accra.
The presentation was made by the U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Virginia Palmer, who emphasized the importance of this donation in reinforcing Ghana’s defenses, particularly along its vulnerable northern borders. As extremist threats and cross-border security challenges continue to grow in the West African sub-region, the U.S. sees Ghana as a key partner in maintaining peace and stability.
“This donation is a testament to the strong and growing defense partnership between the United States and Ghana,” said Ambassador Palmer. “Our collaboration goes beyond equipment—it includes joint training, capacity building, and logistical support to enhance Ghana’s ability to respond to regional threats effectively.”
Ghana’s Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, received the vehicles with gratitude, assuring both the U.S. government and the Ghanaian public that the APCs will be properly maintained and strategically deployed. “This support from our U.S. partners greatly enhances our readiness and ability to contribute to regional and global peace efforts,” he stated.
The donation is the latest in a series of U.S.-Ghana security collaborations aimed at improving the operational capabilities of the GAF and ensuring safety along the country’s borders.
As the region faces evolving security dynamics, such support plays a critical role in Ghana’s preparedness and resilience, while also underscoring the long-standing relationship between the two nations.
