Trump signs an Executive Order to launch the first-ever self-deportation program.

On May 9, 2025, President Donald Trump announced the launch of “Project Homecoming,” a national initiative aimed at encouraging undocumented immigrants to voluntarily leave the United States. The program offers financial incentives and logistical support to those who choose to self-deport, while warning of severe penalties for those who do not comply.

The initiative includes a $1,000 stipend and free travel assistance to undocumented immigrants who voluntarily depart the U.S. A mobile application developed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection allows individuals to declare their intent to leave the country, facilitating the self-deportation process. The program is supported by a significant increase in immigration enforcement personnel, with plans to mobilize an additional 20,000 officers to target individuals residing in the country illegally. Undocumented immigrants who refuse to leave voluntarily may face steep fines, revocation of legal status, and deportation to harsh detention facilities.

Advocacy groups have criticized the program, urging migrants to seek legal counsel before making decisions. Concerns have been raised about the potential for abuse and the adequacy of support for those choosing to self-deport.

“Project Homecoming” represents a significant shift in U.S. immigration policy, emphasizing voluntary departure over traditional deportation methods. While it aims to reduce the number of undocumented immigrants in the country, the initiative has sparked debate over its fairness and effectiveness.
