Tom Lehrer, the American musician, satirist, and mathematician, has died at the age of 97, according to U.S. media reports. His death was confirmed by a close friend, David Herder, to the New York Times.
Lehrer rose to fame in the 1950s and 1960s with his darkly witty, politically charged songs. A Harvard-trained mathematician and classically trained pianist, he balanced his musical success with a long academic career, teaching at Harvard, MIT, and the University of California.
Known for clever classics like The Elements and The Masochism Tango, Lehrer’s work influenced generations of comedians, including Weird Al Yankovic.
Despite stepping away from public performance decades ago, Tom Lehrer’s legacy lives on through his sharp humor and enduring musical parodies.
