Race Car Driver Chris Raschke Dies in Crash at 283mph While Trying to Break World Speed Record.

Tragedy struck at Utah’s famed Bonneville Salt Flats as veteran driver Chris Raschke died in a crash while attempting a land speed record. Raschke lost control of his rocket-shaped vehicle, Speed Demon III, just two miles into the run. Despite being treated for his injuries, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Raschke,  a celebrated driver who set the fastest time of last year’s Speed Week at 459mph, was performing a routine test run, described by his crew as “not even at half speed.” No mechanical failures have been reported.

Race director Keith Pedersen said Raschke’s death was a huge loss to the racing community, praising the camaraderie and trust built over decades. The Speed Demon team expressed being “deeply devastated” by the loss of their driver.

Tributes poured in from competitors and fans alike. Race announcer Brian Lohnes called him “a pillar of the industry,” while fellow teams highlighted his skill, generosity, and passion for racing.

The Bonneville Salt Flats, a historic 100-mile-wide lakebed near Salt Lake City, has been a hub for land speed records since 1914. The current world record for a wheeled vehicle stands at 763mph, set by RAF pilot Andy Green in 1997. Raschke’s death is a stark reminder of the extreme risks involved in pushing the limits of speed.
