Tragic Helicopter Crash Claims Lives of Ghana’s Defence and Environment Ministers

In a devastating incident on Wednesday, August 6, a military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region has reportedly claimed the lives of several high-ranking government officials. Among the confirmed fatalities are:

Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Samuel Aboagye, former Parliamentary Candidate Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC

The helicopter crew, who also perished in the crash, include Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

According to initial reports, the officials were aboard a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter en route to Obuasi when the aircraft went off radar. Emergency response teams rushed to the scene, where disturbing footage and images have shown the charred remains of several victims. Authorities are yet to release a full list of the deceased or injured.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, who was attending an anti-illegal mining event nearby, reportedly left the programme immediately upon learning of the crash to head to the site.

In a brief statement, the Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that efforts were underway to locate and assess the wreckage of the helicopter. The cause of the crash remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing.

This tragedy comes more than a year after a previous military helicopter incident on March 19, 2024, near Bonsukrom in the Western Region, which fortunately resulted in no fatalities.

As families are notified and investigations continue, the nation mourns the sudden loss of prominent leaders and public servants. More updates are expected in the coming days.
