Mahama Unveils Plans for New Six-Lane Accra-Kumasi Expressway, Construction to Begin in 2026

President John Mahama has announced a major new infrastructure initiative — the construction of a brand-new six-lane expressway connecting Accra and Kumasi. According to the president, the project is a top priority for his administration and is scheduled to begin early next year.

The new expressway will feature three lanes in each direction, creating a modern six-lane carriageway that is completely separate from the current dualization works already underway along the corridor.

Speaking on the project, President Mahama emphasized that this expressway forms part of his government’s broader agenda to modernize Ghana’s road infrastructure and improve connectivity between two of the country’s most important cities.

“This is not the dualization project people are already familiar with,” he clarified. “This is a completely new highway that will significantly ease traffic, cut travel time, and open up economic activity between Accra and Kumasi.”

Mahama added that the goal is to see the road fully completed before the end of his term in 2029, ensuring that the benefits of the project are felt within the life of his presidency.

The announcement has sparked interest and debate, especially given the historically congested and accident-prone nature of the current Accra-Kumasi highway. For many, a dedicated six-lane expressway represents not just a smoother commute, but a safer and more efficient transport link for goods, services, and everyday travel.

As the government prepares to break ground in early 2026, attention now turns to funding, contractors, and timelines — all of which will determine how quickly this ambitious infrastructure project takes shape.
