Madagascar becomes the first country in East Africa to launch a cable car system

When people think of Madagascar, they often picture its breathtaking biodiversity, unique wildlife, and lush landscapes. But now, the island nation is making headlines for something far more modern: Madagascar is currently the only country in East Africa with a functioning cable car system.

This innovative mode of transport, often associated with alpine countries or urban cities like Medellín and La Paz, has made its debut in Madagascar as a practical and forward-thinking solution to the country’s urban congestion and geographic challenges.

Installed in the capital city Antananarivo, the cable car system connects some of the city’s hilly and hard-to-reach areas, easing travel for commuters while offering scenic aerial views of the city below. It’s a significant development not just for Madagascar, but for the region — placing the country ahead in sustainable and efficient urban mobility.

As East African cities struggle with traffic and infrastructure gaps, Madagascar’s move could inspire similar innovations across the continent.

Fun Fact:

While cable cars are typically seen as tourist attractions, they are increasingly being used worldwide as cost-effective solutions to urban transport issues in developing countries.
