Government Deploys Security Forces to Bawku, Shifts from Peacekeeping to Peace Enforcement

In response to a recent surge in violence threatening ongoing peace efforts, the Government of Ghana has announced a decisive shift from peacekeeping to peace enforcement in Bawku and its neighboring communities. The move comes as clashes in the area risk undermining years of mediation aimed at resolving the longstanding chieftaincy conflict.

Armed Forces Deployed to Restore Order

A statement released on Sunday, July 27, 2025, by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, confirmed that the Ghana Armed Forces have been deployed to Bawku to maintain law and order. The military is tasked with enforcing intensified curfews to protect lives and property in the volatile region.

“We assure the public that the Ghana Armed Forces will take all necessary measures to protect lives and property,” the statement emphasized, underscoring the government’s commitment to public safety.

Recognition of Mediation Efforts

The government also took the opportunity to commend His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his ongoing mediation role in the Bawku chieftaincy conflict. Special mention was made of the critical support provided by Nayiri and Zugraana, traditional authorities who had helped bring the peace process close to resolution before recent violent outbreaks.

“These very recent killings have necessitated drastic actions to protect all in the interests of the greater good,” the statement noted.

Call for Cooperation and Commitment to Peace

Citizens in the affected communities have been urged to avoid violence and cooperate fully with the Ghana Armed Forces during this enforcement period. While acknowledging that the intervention and curfews may cause inconvenience to peace-loving residents, the government stressed its unwavering commitment to restoring lasting peace and stability.

The statement also highlighted that special attention is being paid to the safety of vulnerable groups, including students, during the ongoing enforcement operations.

The situation in Bawku remains fluid, but the government’s firm response reflects the urgency of protecting citizens and supporting the peace process in the region. Residents and observers alike will be watching closely as efforts continue to restore calm and security.
