Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has reaffirmed his strong commitment to restoring lasting peace in Bawku and its environs, an area deeply affected by ongoing conflict in the Upper East Region. This declaration follows recent initiatives aimed at resolving the protracted Bawku chieftaincy dispute, a complex issue intensified by historical and communal tensions.
During a meeting at Manhyia Palace with a delegation from the UK Advanced Command and Staff Course, the Asantehene conveyed his confidence that the recent mediation talks with the conflicting factions would produce favorable outcomes. He underscored the vital connection between peace and development, emphasizing the duty of traditional authorities to promote conflict resolution. He noted the increasing vulnerability of Bawku, a border town, to the spillover effects of regional insecurity from Burkina Faso.
Since 2023, the Asantehene’s mediation efforts have focused on involving key stakeholders from both the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities to tackle the chieftaincy dispute at the core of the conflict. These efforts are aimed at fostering a stable environment conducive to sustainable development and security in the region.
