Former K-pop star Taeil Sentenced to 3.5 Years in Prison for Rape

Former K-pop star Moon Tae-il, better known as Taeil from the popular boy band NCT, has been sentenced to three years and six months in prison for his involvement in the rape of a Chinese tourist.

The 31-year-old singer was convicted alongside two accomplices, identified in South Korean media only by their surnames, Lee and Hong. The court heard that all three men admitted to taking turns assaulting the victim after she became heavily intoxicated during a night out in Seoul’s Itaewon district.

The incident took place at Lee’s residence after the group had met and consumed alcohol with the woman at a local bar. According to the judge, the victim was unconscious during the attack, which qualifies under South Korean law as “quasi rape”, and due to the involvement of multiple perpetrators, the crime was further classified as “aggravated rape.”

Court Labels Crime as “Extremely Grave”

Despite prosecutors seeking a seven-year prison sentence, the Seoul district court handed down a reduced sentence of three years and six months. The judge cited the fact that the defendants were first-time offenders as a reason for leniency, though acknowledged the “extremely grave” nature of the crime.

In addition to prison time, the court ordered the three men to complete 40 hours of a sexual violence treatment program.

Taeil’s Exit from NCT Preceded the Charges

Taeil quietly departed from NCT in August 2024, when initial allegations began circulating, though details of the crime were not publicly disclosed at that time. His departure came as a shock to fans, many of whom speculated about internal group changes without knowledge of the underlying legal issues.

NCT, which debuted in January 2016 under SM Entertainment, is known for its genre-blending style and experimental approach to K-pop. With multiple sub-units and global recognition, the group has charted on Billboard and gained a strong international following.

Taeil had been known for his vocal talent and clean-cut image, making the revelation all the more disturbing to fans and the wider public.

Public Reaction and Industry Fallout

The sentencing has sparked intense backlash across South Korean and international fan communities. Online platforms have been flooded with anger, disappointment, and calls for stricter punishment in sexual assault cases involving celebrities.

SM Entertainment has yet to issue an updated statement following the sentencing. It previously confirmed Taeil’s departure from NCT but did not comment further on the allegations at the time.
