Cecilia Johnson, former Chairperson of Ghana’s Council of State and a stalwart of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has passed away at the age of 79. She died on Monday, September 22, 2025, after a short illness, according to family and close associates.
Fondly known as “Auntie Ceci”, Johnson was a key figure in Ghanaian politics for decades. She served under multiple administrations — including those of Jerry John Rawlings, John Evans Atta Mills, and John Dramani Mahama — and was widely respected for her commitment to public service.
A former General Secretary of the 31st December Women’s Movement, she was a fierce advocate for women’s empowerment and youth development, helping to pave the way for increased female participation in governance.
Cecilia Johnson was considered one of the NDC’s “Old Guards,” instrumental in guiding the party’s evolution from revolutionary roots into a democratic powerhouse.
Born in Awua-Domase in the Bono Region, she was one of 12 children raised by Joana Bennett, a well-known community matriarch. Her legacy as one of Ghana’s most resilient female politicians will be remembered for years to come.
