The Dompoasehene, Nana Kwabena Ponko, was shot today during the final funeral rites of the Obuasi West MCE’s late mother in what is believed to be a targeted assassination attempt. The incident sent the entire gathering into panic, abruptly disrupting the solemn ceremony.
Witnesses say the chief was seated when the gunman approached and opened fire. He was immediately rushed to the Obuasi Government Hospital for urgent medical attention.
Attendees at the funeral managed to overpower the suspected shooter and hand him over to the Ghana Police Service. Authorities have since begun a full investigation into the motive behind the shocking daylight attack, with the area now secured as part of ongoing inquiries.
More updates are expected as police provide further details on the chief’s condition and the progress of the investigation.
