Breaking: Benin Soldiers Announce Coup — President Patrice Talon Removed

Soldiers in Benin have claimed power — announcing the removal of Patrice Talon and the dissolution of all state institutions in a broadcast on national television.

Identifying themselves as the Military Committee for Refoundation (CMR), the troops said they had ousted Talon and suspended the constitution.

According to their announcement, Pascal Tigri, a lieutenant-colonel, will lead the transition under a new military junta, while all land borders and the country’s airspace are closed.

The dramatic move comes just months before Talon was due to leave office after completing his second term — a transition that until now promised relative political stability.
