Cameroon’s Constitutional Council has officially declared President Paul Biya, aged 92, the winner of the country’s latest presidential election. Biya secured 53.66% of the vote, extending his decades-long rule and making him the world’s oldest sitting president.
His closest challenger, opposition leader Issa Chiroma, who had earlier declared himself the winner, garnered 35.2% of the votes.
Biya, who has led Cameroon since 1982, continues to face criticism from opposition groups and international observers over allegations of electoral irregularities and growing discontent within the country.
Despite mounting calls for political change, Biya’s re-election underscores his enduring grip on power in the Central African nation.
