A tragic incident has rocked the Akyem Abaam community as the body of Hanson Baah, a university student popularly known as Armani, was retrieved from the River Birim on Monday evening. The young man reportedly drowned while allegedly attempting to join a group involved in illegal mining activities.
His disappearance over the weekend sparked widespread concern among locals, who mounted a community search operation. His body was eventually recovered around 5:00 p.m. and has been deposited at the Kade Government Hospital morgue for autopsy.
In a related development, authorities have arrested three Chinese nationals and seized two excavators in the same community for illegal mining. The operation was spearheaded by Kwaebibirem Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Emmanuel Kofi Nti, in collaboration with the Kade District Police.
The incident has heightened calls for stricter enforcement against illegal mining and more awareness about its dangers, especially among the youth.
