Residents living downstream of Ghana’s Weija Dam have been urged to evacuate their homes ahead of the resumption of water spillage on Wednesday, 9 September.
Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) said the dam’s water level had risen to 45.2ft, close to its 46ft threshold.
The company attributed the increase to heavy rains upstream and continued rainfall across the Densu River catchment and its tributaries.
Communities that could be affected include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach and Ada Kopey.
GWL has urged residents to remain alert, follow evacuation directives and avoid activities that could put them at risk.
It has also asked the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), local authorities, traditional leaders and community representatives to prepare for possible evacuations.
