Zakaria Abdulai, the Headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (Obuasi SHTS), has been suspended following serious allegations of sexual misconduct involving female students.
According to an investigative report by journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni and Joy News, Abdulai is accused of taking advantage of at least 16 female students at the school. The findings pointed to gross sexual misconduct and abuse of office.
The situation at the school escalated in August 2026 when students staged a major unrest. They rioted and physically assaulted the headmaster, accusing him of sexual misconduct and of forcing an abortion on a student. The attack left Abdulai with serious injuries that required hospitalisation at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. During the rampage, students also destroyed the headmaster’s bungalow and vehicle.
In the aftermath, police arrested six students. Further investigations by the Obuasi District Police Command led to the arrest of two teachers who were accused of instigating the student attack.
The Ministry of Education described the sexual misconduct allegations as highly serious. Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu subsequently directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to immediately suspend Abdulai pending further action.
