A man has died at Tamale Teaching Hospital in Ghana after a power outage disrupted his dialysis treatment.
The deceased, identified as Ismailia, was undergoing dialysis when the outage occurred.
His brother says they had been on a phone call during the session and that Ismailia appeared fine about an hour into the treatment. About 15 minutes later, he was informed that there had been a blackout, his brother was struggling to breathe and had died.
The family has accused the hospital of lacking adequate backup power and oxygen at the renal centre.
The hospital has confirmed that a power outage occurred that day but says backup systems were in place. Its statement did not directly address the family’s allegations about oxygen and backup power at the renal centre.
The family is calling for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
