Ghana’s Minister for Communications, Sam George, has said the FBI Director should not claim sole credit for a recent cybercrime operation carried out in the country.
The operation, known as Operation Blackout, targeted scam networks. According to Ghana’s Cyber Security Authority (CSA), local authorities led the effort. It resulted in the arrest of 8 suspects and the rescue of 120 people.
The minister’s comments come after the FBI publicly announced the dismantling of a scam operation in Ghana. The US agency reported identifying nearly US$10 million in losses and 89 victims, with more than 130 individuals arrested or detained and over 300 devices seized.
Sam George stressed that Ghanaian institutions played a central role in the operation and that credit should reflect the joint effort rather than being attributed only to the FBI.
