A 29-year-old Ghanaian, Linford Atakora, has been sentenced to approximately nine months in federal custody in the United States for using a US citizen’s identity and Social Security number to secure employment.
According to court documents, Atakora used the stolen identity to obtain work and access employment-related benefits. His actions resulted in claims totalling more than US$51,000, causing financial losses and exposing the victim to potential legal and administrative complications.
The case highlights the serious consequences of identity theft and the use of fraudulent documents in the United States. Federal authorities treat the misuse of Social Security numbers and personal information as serious offences, particularly when the conduct involves employment, financial claims or government records.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered Atakora to pay any applicable restitution and to be removed from the United States after completing his sentence. He is expected to be deported to Ghana, where he may face restrictions on returning to the United States.
