Teachers in Ghana have taken their protest to the Ghana Education Service, demanding payment of salary arrears stretching up to 14 months.
An aggrieved teacher said years in the classroom have left many with little to show. “You can teach in Ghana for 25 years and still have nothing to show for it, so we want our money to relocate to Libya or Dubai,” the teacher said, calling for the outstanding salaries to be paid.
The protesters, including newly recruited teachers from colleges of education and universities, say they have been working in classrooms without regular pay and, in some cases, without staff identification numbers needed to get on the payroll.
They argue the delay has left them struggling with rent, debt and family costs. Government and the Ghana Education Service have previously said arrears would be cleared in instalments, but teachers say the payments have not come as promised.
