In June 2026, Burkina Faso suspended beauty pageants while drafting new regulations. The same year, it launched Hakili Mousso, a national science competition for young women.
The first edition in September brought together 84 contestants in mathematics, physics and chemistry. Winners received cash prizes, motorcycles, laptops and scholarships.
The initiative aims to challenge the idea that science is mainly for men and encourage more girls into scientific careers. Culture Minister officials have since confirmed beauty pageants will return in a revised format that celebrates Burkinabe culture, traditional clothing and local values.
