An American missionary and pilot with the evangelical organization Serving in Mission has reportedly been kidnapped in Niamey, the capital of Niger. According to security sources, the abduction occurred on Tuesday night in the Plateau neighbourhood as the missionary was on his way to the airport.
Witnesses say three unidentified men seized the missionary before heading toward the Tillaberi region, an area known for the presence of Islamist militants affiliated with both the Islamic State and al-Qaeda.
The U.S. State Department has yet to issue a statement regarding the incident, while local authorities continue their investigation.
Kidnappings have become increasingly common across parts of West Africa this year, particularly in regions affected by extremist activity. The growing insecurity highlights the persistent threats faced by humanitarian and missionary workers operating in volatile areas.
