The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has promoted Private Solomon Asare Teye-Tsu to the rank of Lance Corporal for demonstrating exceptional integrity and patriotism in the face of corruption. The promotion was conferred at an all-rank durbar held at Burma Hall, Burma Camp in Accra on Friday, July 11, 2025.
L/Cpl Teye-Tsu, who currently serves with the Department of Public Relations, made national headlines late last year when he rejected a substantial bribe from illegal miners (galamsey operators) while on official guard duty at the Bibiani Gold Mines. Instead of accepting the bribe, he apprehended the miners and handed them over to the authorities, reinforcing the military’s stance on upholding discipline and the fight against illegal mining.
At the durbar, the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General William Agyapong, decorated the young soldier and applauded him for his honesty and loyalty. The event was attended by senior officers and ranks across the Armed Forces.
“Much as acts of indiscipline will attract sanctions, professional conduct such as that of L/Cpl Teye-Tsu will attract reward and commendation,”
— Lt. Gen. William Agyapong, CDS
As part of his reward package, L/Cpl Teye-Tsu was also:
Presented with a second citation of commendation for his integrity Nominated to serve with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) — a significant opportunity in any Ghanaian soldier’s career
L/Cpl Teye-Tsu, aged 30, has been widely praised by the public and civil society organisations for his role in combating galamsey, a menace that continues to threaten Ghana’s environment and natural resources. His story not only highlights the ethical challenges faced by security personnel on the front lines but also underscores the importance of patriotism, discipline, and professional conduct within the ranks of the Ghana Armed Forces.
The GAF’s decision to honour him sends a powerful message — that integrity still matters, and those who serve with honour will be recognised.
