Chichester City FC has confirmed the tragic death of 21-year-old forward Billy Vigar, a former Arsenal academy striker, after he sustained a significant brain injury during a match last weekend.
Vigar, who hailed from Worthing, was injured while playing in an Isthmian League Premier Division game against Wingate & Finchley. Though unconfirmed by the club, reports suggest the fatal injury may have resulted from a collision with a concrete wall.
He was placed in an induced coma following the incident, but passed away despite undergoing surgery.
In a heartfelt statement, Vigar’s family said:
“We are devastated that this has happened while he was playing the sport he loved.”
Vigar’s football journey began in Arsenal’s academy, and he went on to represent Derby County, Hastings United, and Eastbourne Borough. Former clubs have shared emotional tributes, praising his talent and character.
Derby County expressed deep sadness, noting his impact on their Under-21 squad, while Hastings United and Eastbourne Borough described the loss as “devastating” and “deeply saddening.”
As tributes continue to pour in across the football world, Billy Vigar is remembered not just for his promise on the pitch, but for the passion and joy he brought to the game.
