Three young men lost their lives in the early hours of Thursday when an illegal gold mining pit collapsed at Twifo Mampong in the Twifo Atti Morkwaa District of Ghana’s Central Region.
According to the Twifo Praso District Police Command, the victims were among five individuals who allegedly entered the restricted site around 1 a.m. to engage in illegal mining activities. The pit gave way, trapping the group underground.
Emergency responders were able to rescue two survivors, but the remaining three were pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and continue to warn the public about the dangers of illegal mining operations.
